NCAA Championship Basketball Carbon Neutral in 2021

August 17, 2021 (Boyertown, PA) – ClimeCo is pleased to be a part of the effort to make the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship carbon neutral.  ClimeCo teamed up with Heritage Interactive Services (Heritage) to contribute offsets to mitigate this year’s tournament, held in Indianapolis, IN.

IUPUI’s Office of Sustainability, a partnership between Indiana University and Perdue University, collected emissions data across seven event venues, including electricity, gas, steam, and chilled water.  This data was used to quantify the greenhouse gas footprint and determine the number of carbon offsets necessary to achieve carbon neutrality for March Madness.

“As long-time NCAA Tournament fans, we are really excited to work with Heritage to help ensure the 2021 NCAA tournament is run in an environmentally sustainable fashion,” said Bill Flederbach, President of ClimeCo.  “Having events like this become carbon neutral is a big win when it comes to combating climate change!”

March Madness used over 2.2 million kilowatt-hours of energy to power the practice and tournament facilities. That number is equivalent to the amount of electricity it takes to power approximately 2,200 households in Indiana for one month.  In addition, all operational emissions from venues of tournaments were mitigated by selecting carbon reduction projects across the country – supporting wind energy, landfill gas capture and destruction, and preservation of natural forest habitat.

ClimeCo is excited to announce that they will be working with Neal Casal Music Foundation to voluntarily mitigate the carbon emissions of the manufacturing and shipping of the Neal Casal Music Foundation’s Tribute Album CollectionHighway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal. This collection is a tribute to the life and music of the gifted singer, songwriter, musician, and friend to many. Featuring 41 of Neal’s songs on 5 LPs or 3 CDs, the collecti
on brings together a galaxy of rock and roots music luminaries to reimagine the body of work he left behind, while celebrating his enduring impact as an artist.

It is an honor to assist the Neal Casal Music Foundation in mitigating the carbon emissions associated with the tribute album. In addition to Neal playing on many albums that I own, some of my favorite musicians appear on Highway Butterfly. Additional collectibles include a poster and baseball card with photos of Casal by photographer Jay Blakesberg and stickers designed by poster artists Alan Forbes and Marq Spusta. The Neal Casal Music Foundation and record label Royal Potato Family who partnered to release the collection will also be working with ClimeCo to voluntarily mitigate the carbon emissions from the manufacturing and shipping of the box sets.

Heritage Sustainability Investments and ClimeCo Provide Capital to Restore the Earth Foundation

July 15, 2021 (Indianapolis, IN) Heritage Sustainability Investments, LLC, a subsidiary of The Heritage Group and affiliate of Heritage Environmental Services, LLC, (collectively, Heritage), and ClimeCo joined together to provide capital to Restore the Earth Foundation, Inc. (Restore the Earth) to provide for the native trees and planting for the reforestation of 4,000 acres of the Pointe-aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area in Louisiana.  The freshwater marsh area will be planted with native Bald Cypress seedlings. In addition to the sequestration of CO2, the project will reduce flood and storm risk to local communities by creating a first line of defense in the form of healthy forest ecosystems and restore fragmented wildlife habitats. The project is anticipated to create 800,000 Climate Action Reserve Forward Mitigation Units (FMUs).

Restore the Earth

“The benefits of reforestation projects like this reach far beyond the immediately impacted areas,” said Chad Peterson, President of Heritage Sustainability Investments. “The work Restore the Earth is doing not only benefits the environment, but also the people and businesses in southern Louisiana. Collaborating with ClimeCo on this project will help us make a lasting difference in the community and drive future GHG reduction.”

Restore the Earth pioneered the development of the Climate Action Reserve’s Climate Forward Reforestation methodology. The program provides a mechanism to quantify, verify and register FMUs, which represent emissions that are forecasted to be mitigated in the future, using rigorous and peer–reviewed carbon reduction project methodologies. FMUs will be marketed to voluntary buyers by ClimeCo to help fund future reforestation efforts in the basin. The program is designed to encourage companies and organizations to invest in projects that mitigate future greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

“Restoration of degraded lands is one of the most critical project types society can undertake to meet the challenge of climate change,” says Derek Six, Chief Business Officer for ClimeCo.  “Reforestation provides a clear and enduring GHG mitigation impact, and generations to come will enjoy the wide array of ecological benefits these projects create. ClimeCo is excited to be working with Restore the Earth and to continue to support their ambitious goals in the Mississippi River Delta.”

Ballard Spahr, a national law firm with more than 600 attorneys in 15 offices nationwide, served as counsel to ClimeCo for the project. Attorneys supported the formation and management of a special purpose LLC for the effort, prepared the transaction and financing documents, and advised on matters involving the carbon offset protocols and requirements for generating the FMUs.

World’s First Plastic Credit

June 8th, 2021 (Boyertown, PA)ClimeCo, a leader in the management and development of environmental commodities, has partnered with TONTOTON, a project developer in Vietnam that removes no-value plastic from the environment to generate the world’s first plastic credit from an independent protocol and 3rd party verification audit.  These credits were achieved through the Ocean Bound Plastic Neutrality Certification from French-based NGO Zero Plastic Oceans, and have been verified by leading global certification specialist Control Union Certifications.  A plastic credit is an environmental commodity that represents the collection or recycling of one tonne of plastic material, which can be transferred between organizations. ClimeCo will market the plastic credits generated from this partnership, and clients will have the ability to purchase credits to use in their ESG, CSR, and sustainability programs.

“We decided to partner with and support TONTOTON because of their solution to create value in recovering plastic waste before it enters the ocean, that without them would otherwise not happen,” says Chris Parker, Director of Plastic Markets at ClimeCo. “Their values of addressing environmental justice, community health, and the welfare of workers matched our own.”

TONTOTON projects recover post-consumer, non-recyclable, ocean-bound plastic waste and co-process it into AFRM (Alternative Fuels & Raw Materials), which replaces coal at a local manufacturing plant to reduce the site’s GHG emissions. TONTOTON’s program is built on economic benefits for all parties, from the informal waste pickers to the funding companies. ClimeCo’s investment in TONTOTON has allowed them to hire workers, expand capacity, and start working in new areas in Vietnam to scale up the volume of plastic waste recovery.

“Plastic credits allow us to create a significant environmental and social impact by focusing on non-recyclable plastic that has no demand in the commodity market and is the main cause of pollution in our oceans,” says Barak Ekshtein, Founder and CEO at TONTOTON. “ClimeCo’s environmental approach to long-term solutions allows us to be creative in developing sustainable circular economy projects that will impact the environment over the years.”

Many social and environmental co-benefits should result from successful plastic credit projects. TONTOTON provides workers who are primarily female with an additional sustainable income, personal protective equipment, and primary health insurance for those who need it. The projects also support local governments, NGOs, and local businesses to build sustainable waste management infrastructure where it does not exist, creating circular economics. Their work is helping to conserve marine biodiversity and contributing to ecosystem restoration.
